Joshua Solcum
Joshua Solcum was the first person to sail single handed around the world.
A Canadian/American born in Mount Hanley Nova scotia on February 20 1844, Solcum began his time at sea at the age of 14 aboard a fishing schooner as a cabin boy. At age 16 Solcum set out across the atlantic on a merchant vessel and found himself signing on with British merchant shipping,
which took him to across the indian and Pacific oceans as well. At 29 Solucum gained command a barque transporting trade about the Pacific, within
the next 20 years Solucum would have various commands and eventualy end up owning a few of his own.
In 1895 on April 24, Solcum at age 51 left Boston Massachusetts on a voyage that would see him in the end to achieve the worlds first solo circumnavigation.
His boat "Sray" a 39'8" wooden oyster sloop he had rebuilt from its degradation would keep for 14 years until in 1909 both Solcum and Spray were lost at sea.
Solcum wrote 2 books "Sailing Alone Around the World" and "A Centennial Tribute".
